Song # 5
“GOTTA DANCE” Tommy Bolin
Demo/Outtake during the recording of ‘Private Eyes’ 1976
COMMENT:
Jimmy Haslip (Interview with www.tommybolinofficial.com, May 2013)
“Tommy was excited about bringing that band into the studio – Mark Craney, Max Carl, myself and Norma Jean Bell. He said that he had an idea for a record and I don't know if he had started writing songs or not, but he had an idea for the title of the record. He wanted to call it ‘I Gotta Dance’.”
Song#4
“GETTIN' TIGHTER” Deep Purple

Probably my favourite track from the album, funky with some great playing. Loved it when they stretched this out live!
Song # 3
“SHAKE THE DEVIL” Tommy Bolin
From the album, ‘Private Eyes’ 1976

The 1st song I heard from ‘Private Eyes’ and HAD to get the album. Great riff, but I particularly like Tommy's vocals – suits the song perfectly. It's heavy, but it also has that ‘funk’ factor, which I love...
Song#2
“HEAD ABOVE THE WATER” James Gang
From the album ‘Miami’ 1974

What a lost gem. I've had the album for years (decades lol) and had completely overlooked this song for far too long. It showcases Tommy's songwriting skills (alongside Dale Peters) and the whole band do it complete justice. I particularly like the flanged guitar, very common at the time, but totally fits the song. Although I'm not a huge Kenner fan, he does a great vocal on this – mind you, I'd love to hear Coverdale and/or Hughes giving it a go lol...
Song#1
“RED BARON” Billy Cobham
From the album ‘Spectrum’ 1973
YOUR VIEWS | Dave S.
“Spectrum” & “Quadrant 4” are probably the most mentioned songs from the album, but I've always loved this particular track for its slinky and laid back groove. Tommy & Jan's solos are a far cry from their blistering bursts on “Quadrant 4” but beautifully crafted in their own right. A perfect album closer...
